“Caminho Part 1: Valença”, a new release by Kevin Flanagan & André Nascimento
This is the first EP in a series of three. The project started in 2018, when British/American musician and composer Kevin Flanagan received a commission for a piece based on a five-day walk along on the Peddars’ Way, a Roman Road in Norfolk, using its ancient churches as the starting point for compositions based on field recordings and later on, performances.
In 2020, I met with Flanagan in Lisbon and we discussed the possibility of remixing existing work and creating more pieces along the same lines. Because of Covid, we only resumed work in 2022 to apply the same compositional methods (geographical coordinates and local sound recordings as musical sources) on the Caminho de Santiago, the historical pilgrims’ way, specifically in Northern Portugal (Minho).
The two areas naturally combine in a single continuing project, as we discovered that the Peddars Way forms an extension of the Caminho in England. This first volume contains electronic and experimental compositions based on the recordings made in Valença, Portugal.
