Maria João / OGRE trio @ Katowice Jazzfest reviews & photos

Maria João is a miracle herself. And the best evidence that Britney’s “Toxic” can be jazzy too. Obrigada, Maria. Come back again! Photo: Radoslaw Kazmierczak Fotografia

And here is a review of the concert:

“My deeply rooted reluctance in terms of jazz soloists again made itself known shortly before the Maria João’s show at NOSPR Concert Hall when, in vain, I searched the website for information about the Iberian artist. However, what this Portuguese singer then revealed was beyond my wildest expectations and confirmed my belief that jazz, much like this woman gifted with an extraordinary voice, is completely inscrutable. Over the course of one hour and a half, backed by two instrumentalists – João Farinha (Fender Rhodes and synthesiser) and André Nascimento (electronics) – Maria João displayed supreme vocal acrobatics on the stage of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Hall. Who knows if this performance by Maria João’s Ogre trio wasn’t the pièce de résistance of this year’s Katowice JazzArt Festival.
After this concert by the Portuguese singer, which in one single evening restored my faith in the unfathomable beauty of the female voice, I bought her – not yet officially released – album Plástico, which I obviously strongly recommend to everyone. (…) The divine Maria João knocked out the public of the 4th Katowice JazzArt Festival.”
